Pennsylvania game wardens believe they know what led a bear attack in Lycoming County.

WNEP-TV reports a game commission investigation revealed the bear may have been with cubs.

Game wardens believe Melinda Lebarron was attacked when she went to retrieve her dog which had run toward the bear.

A previous theory was that the bear may have been attracted to deer parts from the recent hunting season left near the home.

The bear grabbed Lebarron’s leg and dragged her more than 80 yards from her house in Muncy Creek Township. A relative said Lebarron crawled back to her house to call for help.

Lebarron suffered broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and multiple other wounds. She remained in critical condition but was stable at a hospital on Friday.

Game wardens have two traps near Lebarron’s home. If the bear is trapped, wardens say the bear will be euthanized.
