California man identified in Campbell County crash

A California man died in a two-semi crash south of Mound City last week.

The crash was at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 83 near mile marker 224. That's two miles south of Mound City.

According to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, David Thompson, 31, of Milbank was driving north on Highway 83 in a 2004 Peterbilt semi with a 30-foot wide load. Tony Mangan, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said the wide load was a house. 

Rafael Lopez, 58, of Bloomington, Calif., was southbound on and struck the left front corner of the house. Lopez died in the crash. Thompson was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Mangan said it appears Thompson attempted to pull over as far as he could when he saw the approaching semi. The crash is still under investigation.
