Aberdeen Central, for the second straight night, struggled to put the ball in the bucket.

The Golden Eagles girls basketball team scored just three points in both the first and second quarters, eventually falling 54-28 to fourth-ranked Harrisburg Saturday afternoon in Harrisburg. It was the second straight game against a ranked team for Central, which got looks, but not points, against No. 3 Sioux Falls Lincoln a day prior.

“These kids worked hard this weekend, but the frustrations of the ball not going through the hoop showed up in the first half,” said Central coach Dawn Seiler. “It’s hard to watch them not be rewarded when they are trying to do the right things. We faced two very good teams and we played some good basketball in each contest but our inability to finish plays consistently was an issue.”

Such was not the case for Harrisburg, which had 28 points by halftime on the strength of four 3-pointers and a host of buckets elsewhere. The Tigers slowed, minimally, in the second half as Central closed the gap led by a strong second half-effort from senior Emma Yeske. Both Yeske and Cassidy Gough were held scoreless in the first half.

“(Brooklyn) Kusler and Yeske had good weekends, but we need everybody every night to be at their best,” Seiler said. “We will keep playing hard and hopefully we will see these kids get rewarded for their efforts. We have a lot of basketball to play in a short time. We need to step up to the challenge.”

Jeniah Ugofsky had 12 points off the bench to lead Harrisburg.

Yeske had nine to lead Central. Kusler, who had all six of the Golden Eagles’ first-half points, finished with eight.

Central will head to Pierre Tuesday.
