Child, mother bitten by dog at animal shelter in Jacksonville, City officials confirm

UPDATE 6/21/2019 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — - Today, the City told Action News Jax the dog involved in the incident was euthanized at the end of the day.

Right now, we’re still working to get the incident report from the City to learn more about what led up to the dog biting the mother and child at ACPS last week.

- Action News Jax reached out to the City several times on Wednesday to find out more about how the child and mother were bitten.

We were told more information would be released when it’s available.

Action News Jax reached out to ACPS to find out if all proper procedures were followed.

Here’s what’s supposed to happen: The staff member is supposed to stay with the animal to help make sure interaction goes smoothly and answer any questions the adopter may have.

When Action News Jax asked the City if the procedure was followed on Tuesday when the mother and child were bitten, the City said yes.

Action News Jax requested the incident report from the City to learn more about what happened at ACPS. They said it won't be available until the dog is removed from quarantine in 9 days.

ORIGINAL STORY

- A child and mother have been bitten by a dog at Animal Care Protective Services in Jacksonville, the City confirms.

A source tells Action News Jax that the child is 7 years old and was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries after being bitten on the thigh.

The mother was also take to the hospital.

According to an Action News Jax source, the boy was at ASPCA with his family looking for a dog.

During that time, something happend and the dog bit the mother and the boy, the source said.

The city said the dog has been quaratined.

The City of Jacksonville did not say what lead up to the child  being bitten, but released a statement regarding the incident:

We care greatly about the safety of every citizen in Jacksonville and we are saddened to hear about the incident today at Animal Control and Protective Services.  We are troubled with these events and will be reviewing  all procedures and processes to ensure safety at our facility. Since this is an ongoing investigation, we have no other comment at this time beyond our sincere thoughts for the swift and complete recovery of the mom and her child.
