Send Ben: Jacksonville woman gets refund after money stolen from PayPal account

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax is getting answers for a local woman who says hundreds of dollars were stolen out of her PayPal account.

“It is beyond frustrating,” Suzy Orr told Ben Becker.

The Jacksonville woman says $482 disappeared out of her PayPal account in May after someone made a transaction at a local Walmart.

In live chats with PayPal, a service representative told Orr “we did not see any unauthorized use of your account.” When Orr tried to get a resolution again, she received a message saying “The estimated response time is a few hours.”

“I have spent more than 20 hours resolving this and everybody is like, ‘Too bad,’” said a frustrated Orr. “If it’s happening to me, it’s happening to a lot of people and nobody cares.”

So Becker got to work. He contacted PayPal and just one day later, Orr was sent an email by customer service that confirmed her account had been accessed by an “unauthorized third party” and that she would receive a “full refund of $482.”

Then Becker received an email from Orr.

“Ben YOU DID IT !!!!! THANK YOU! I got my money back.”

Orr has this piece of advice for Paypal users:

“Don’t have cash in your account.”

Typically, PayPal is targeted by identity thieves because a single PayPal account can link to multiple bank accounts. Fortunately for Orr, this was not the case.
