36-year-old driver dies in fiery crash near Midtown Anchorage

UPDATE 9 a.m. Monday:

Anchorage police on Monday identified the driver as Gilbert Naomoff, 36.

Original story:

A crash south of Midtown Anchorage left a man dead Friday evening after his car struck a bridge, rolled and caught on fire, according to Anchorage police.

Just before 6 p.m. Friday, patrol officers were dispatched to a report of a crash at Arctic Boulevard and West Dowling Road, according to an alert. Police believe a silver Dodge Stratus was heading south on Arctic “at a very high rate of speed” when it “hit a bridge near the railroad tracks, rolled multiple times, then caught fire.”

The man driving the car — and its sole occupant — was declared dead at the scene, police said. No one else was injured, according to police.

Police have not identified the man who died in the crash, pending notification of his next of kin.
