Anchorage School District cancels outdoor athletic events due to wildfire smoke

The Anchorage School District canceled all outdoor athletic practices and competitions Tuesday because of heavy wildfire smoke, a spokesman said.

Alan Brown said schools have the option to move athletic events inside if they’re able to.

Otherwise, changes to scheduling or outdoor activities for the first day back from summer break are being made at the discretion of individual schools.

Several Anchorage principals said they opted to hold recess indoors Tuesday, and others gave students the option of staying inside during breaks.

The district told parents to weigh whether it was best to send their children to school.

“As parents/guardians, you know your children best. If your child is predisposed to respiratory issues, we advise you to use your best judgment in determining whether or not your child should attend school,” the district said in a Facebook post Monday.
