Anchorage hires state assistant attorney general as city’s top lawyer

The city of Anchorage has hired Kate Vogel, a senior assistant attorney general for the state, to run its Department of Law, according to a statement Friday from the mayor’s office.

Vogel will replace current municipal attorney Becky Windt Pearson, who took a job with telecommunications company GCI.

Vogel has been with the state attorney general’s office since 2013. She will start in Anchorage on Feb. 24, according to the mayor’s office.

The city announced Windt Pearson’s departure in early December, and she will remain on the job through January. With the hire, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz filled the remaining vacancy in his cabinet: Chief of staff Ona Brause also gave notice in late 2019, and deputy chief of staff Jason Bockenstedt has been promoted to her position.

Before working as a state attorney, Vogel clerked for Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Morgan Christen, and worked in private practice in New York. She received her law degree from Yale Law School.

Dee Ennis, deputy municipal attorney, will fill in as the city’s top attorney in February until Vogel starts.
