Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles in Anchorage is moving to the University Center in Midtown

Anchorage residents who need to visit the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles office will soon go to a new location that will offer text alerts and speedier service.

The city’s DMV will be moving from its current location at 1300 W. Benson Blvd. to the University Center on Old Seward Highway in Midtown this summer, according to a department announcement.

The new office is scheduled to open to the public on Aug. 3.

It will streamline its services to include text alerts with a station number for customers so they do not have to wait inside the building. Customers will still be able to take a paper ticket and wait inside if they prefer.

The new location is lower-cost, more centrally located and has a larger waiting area and space for 25 stations, which will increase the DMV’s capacity by about 50%, according to its deputy director, Jenna Wamsganz.

“Our goal is for customers to be in and out in less than 30 minutes for most transactions,” Wamsganz said in the announcement.

Correction: An earlier headline on this story incorrectly called the Alaska DMV the Department of Motor Vehicles; it is the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles.
