UAA ski team, buoyed by a podium finish, finishes third at Colorado Invitational

Sigurd Roenning earned a spot on the podium and the UAA ski team placed third in the team standings Sunday on the final day of the Colorado Invitational.

Roenning, a sophomore from Norway, claimed third place in the men’s 20-kilometer classic in Steamboat Springs to lead six Seawolves into the top 15.

JC Schoonmaker, fresh off of his World Cup debut the previous week, placed ninth and Espen Persen 12th in the men’s race. In the women’s 15K, Anna Darnell led UAA in ninth place, Natalie Hynes was 12th and Hannah Rudd 14th.

“Sigurd raced in control and did what he had to do in order to make the podium,” UAA coach Marine Dusser Bjornsen said in a release from the school. “He had good skis and felt OK but not amazing yet. It's only our fourth day at altitude, so I believe he and the rest of the team will feel even better next weekend for the DU Invitational.”

Anchorage skiers Emma Tarbath of Montana State and Luke Jager of Utah finished sixth in the women’s race and seventh in the men’s race, respectively.

Utah took the team title at the meet, which included two alpine races earlier in the week and cross-country races on Saturday and Sunday, with 745 points. Colorado was second with 641, followed by UAA with 523.

UAA’s cross-country skiers will remain in Colorado for next weekend’s races in the Denver Invitational. The alpine racers have already competed in the DU slalom and giant slaloms.
