ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Air Force officer based in Alaska was hit and killed by a vehicle while cycling last Saturday, according to Eielson Air Force Base officials.

Maj. Michael “Cal” Gentry, 37, and two other airmen were on a cycling trip when Gentry was hit at around 6 a.m. on the Steese Highway northeast of Fairbanks, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

One of the other airmen was also injured, the base said in a statement. He was treated at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and released.

Details about their injuries and the type of vehicle involved were not immediately available.

It is still not clear what caused the vehicle to hit the airmen or if the driver was charged or cited. A spokesman for the air base, Capt. Kay Magdalena Nissen, said the investigation is still ongoing.

“Our entire team is heartbroken at the loss of Cal Gentry to this tragic accident,” said Col. Shawn Anger, 354th Fighter Wing commander, in a statement. “He loved anything and everything outdoors and there is at least a little solace knowing Cal died doing something he loved.”

Gentry was serving as the 354th Contracting Squadron’s commander during the time of his death.

He had been with the Air Force since 2007. His military decorations included the Air Force Achievement medal, the Air Force Commendation medal, the Joint Service commendation medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Gentry is survived by his mother, wife and two sons.
