Alabama DB ambushed in interview, agrees to shave head for championship

The next season of Bama Cuts might have a plot twist.

The web video series produced by the Alabama football program in the facility’s barber shop would have a more dramatic moment should things go the Crimson Tide’s way this season.

Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs was put on the spot by a teammate in one of the few humorous moments that broke up the moment for players doing media interviews Monday.

This whole deal started when Diggs jumped in on fellow cornerback Patrick Surtain II’s interview time. He asked when the sophomore might be getting a haircut. Well, Surtain stuck around for Diggs’ time in front of the cameras and he slipped in a question of his own.

Surtain: If we win the natty this year, would you shave your head bald?

Diggs: (Pauses, smiles) All the way bald?

Yup.

Diggs: Uhhh, yeah.

There’s no denying the clippers in case of a championship with all those cameras rolling

“Yeah,” the ambushed cornerback admitted. “I’ve got to do it now.”

The two defensive backs had another moment a few minutes earlier in Diggs’ time fielding questions. The beads of sweat hadn’t just formed on the senior’s forehead, they were racing down his cheek when Surtain snuck in the side of the gaggle to hand Diggs a few paper towels.

“Thank you,” a grinning Diggs said as he wiped off his face. “These lights …”

In fairness, those massive lighting rigs that hang from the ceiling have been making players sweat for years. Dont’a Hightower used to bring a towel as a preemptive measure.

Offensive lineman Jedrick Wills forehead also glistened Monday when his interview started off on a lighter note. It’s been a while since his SEC championship game celebration dance lit up the internet but his answer Monday was timely.

“I’m going to have to give it to Irv Smith,” Wills said. “He taught me how to do it. But it was just a moment of excitement.”

It followed Jalen Hurts’ quarterback scramble that turned out to be the game-winner in the SEC title game win over Georgia in December. Not a day goes by without Wills hearing something about his slick moves caught by AL.com cameras.

Well, Smith seemed to confirm the Wills’ origin story Sunday night when he scored his first touchdown in a Minnesota Vikings jersey. It was brief, but the celebratory dance looked to be at least a cousin of Wills’ offensive linemen version.

“I don’t know what he calls it,” Wills said. “I think it’s a Louisiana thing. That’s where it came from.”
