Birmingham’s tallest building getting new name as Wells Fargo to move

Wells Fargo

Work crews using a helicopter place the signs atop the Wells Fargo building in Birmingham, Ala., Sunday, September 12, 2010.

Wells Fargo will move out of its current downtown Birmingham location on 20th Street this year, and will remove its name from the city’s tallest building by December.

The bank today announced it will relocate to 1901 6th Ave. N. in Harbert Plaza, less than a block away from the 20th Street location. The existing drive-through motor bank at 401 19th St. N. will continue.

“We are proud to call Birmingham home and look forward to serving the community at our new Harbert Plaza location,” Leigh Collier, Wells Fargo Central Alabama region bank president said.

Wells Fargo has more than 30 full-service branches and almost 60 ATMs across the Birmingham region.

The 34-story Wells Fargo Tower will be known as the Shipt Tower after renovations to the building are completed. Shipt will continue to house its headquarters at the John Hand Building, where the company announced last July that it would remain in Birmingham while adding 881 jobs.

The Wells Fargo Tower was built in 1986 as the corporate headquarters of SouthTrust Bank, and later housed Wachovia until 2010, when Wells Fargo purchased Wachovia and adorned the building with its name.

Despite the changes, Wells Fargo says its commitment to the Birmingham area remains strong. The company employs about 2,000 people in the Birmingham area.

Next Saturday, employees will take part in the company’s annual day of service, Community Service Super Saturday. And last year, Wells Fargo donated more than $1.8 million to 147 local nonprofits, schools and community organizations, and employees donated $141,683.
