St. Paul’s 2020 linebacker/safety Reggie Bracy is going to be a Hawkeye.
The 6-foot, 198-pound senior committed to Iowa this morning after a weekend visit to campus.
“I feel like it’s the best fit for me for what I want to do academically and athletically for the next three, four, five years,” Bracy told AL.com. “The people up there are great. They will teach me what I need to know on and off the field.”
Bracy, a three-star prospect, chose Iowa over Indiana. He also had offers from Air Force, Central Michigan, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy and UAB, among others.
“I think Reggie is a really, really good football player,” St. Paul’s coach Steve Mask said. “That’s obvious by the offers he’s already received. He’s had a lot of interest from a lot of different teams. He is one of the best safeties I’ve ever coached. He will be our quarterback on defense this year.”
Bracy has played multiple positions in his St. Paul’s career, including linebacker, strong safety, free safety and even running back. Mask said new Saints’ defensive coordinator Ham Barnett could play him at multiple spots again this season.
“Ham will find a way to show his strengths, and we will likely use him in a lot of different spots,” Mask said.
Bracy said Iowa coaches have talked to him about learning each safety position as well as a rover spot. Mask said his game could be similar to former Hawkeye and longtime NFL player Bob Sanders.
“He will be really good in their system because he can roll down and play the run really well,” he said.
Bracy missed the last four games of the 2018 regular season after dislocating his elbow in a loss to Spanish Fort. He returned for a first-round playoff game against Opelika. He and Mask said he is 100 percent healthy this summer.
“I’ve been completely cleared,” Bracy said. “I’ve did everything in the spring and have been participating in all the summer workouts. I’m ready to go out this fall and help my team to achieve our goals.”
Bracy is the second St. Paul’s 2020 player to commit. Defensive tackle Daniel Foster-Allen committed to Auburn earlier this year. The Saints still have several other players being heavily recruited, including tackle Brady Ward and running back Jordon Ingram.
In limited action last year because of the injury, Bracy had 53 tackles, five pass break-ups, a sack and two forced fumbles. Bracy said he wasn’t worried about the notoriously cold weather in Iowa.
“I’ll be ready for it,” he said. “If I get drafted by the New England Patriots, it will be cold up there, too. I guess I’ll just take advantage of being inside when I can.”
