The Alabama Crimson Tide and their well-paid head coach got an unexpected shout-out during Netflix’s new and long-awaited sitcom “Space Force,” much to the delight of those who binged when it released on Friday.
The new workplace comedy centers on a group of people tasked with establishing the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the United States Space Force. It stars Steve Carell and John Malkovich.
A few minutes into the the show’s eighth episode “Conjugal Visit,” the team seeks out a contractor for a new project, and their pick wants to hammer out the contract before they move forward.
Malkovich says the terms were agreed to during a preliminary call, but the contract says he wants more and demands $1 million for the job.
Malkovich laughs off the request and says, “No government employee gets paid a million dollars,” before the contractor interjects with a reference to the head coach.
“No, no, no. I heard coach Saban makes over $7 million a year,” he says, before dropping the big one. “Roll Tide!”
Ben Schwartz’s character follows up with his own “Roll tide roll!” and is chastised by his colleague: “Oh you would be a Bama fan.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry for liking winners,” Schwartz retorts.
In July 2018, Saban got a raise and added a year to his contract, putting it at a whopping $7.5 million with a $400,000 increase each year through 2025.
“Space Force” is now streaming on Netflix. ESPN’s Holly Rowe shared the clip on Twitter Friday night. Watch it below:
