Rain expected to add up this week in Alabama

Tuesday is expected to be the first in a stretch of rainy days for parts of Alabama.

A lot of rain is in the forecast, the National Weather Service continues to be concerned about the potential for flooding as the week continues.

Four to six inches of rain are expected across parts of the state through the end of the week, with additional rain possible this weekend as well.

When you add that much rain to already saturated ground, flooding becomes more likely.

North and central Alabama still are expected to get the most rain, although south Alabama is in line for some as well.

The weather service has issued flood watches for parts of north and central Alabama that will go into effect today.

Periodic heavy rain -- and a few thunderstorms too -- will be possible starting today.

The rain could be on the heavier side on Wednesday and Thursday, and a few stronger storms will also be possible, especially for areas in southwest Alabama, according to forecasters.

The weather service thinks that the main concern will be flooding of low-lying, flood-prone areas and streams. That will lead to eventual river flooding that could last into next week.
