Bestselling Christian author and Birmingham native Rachel Held Evans is in intensive care after suffering seizures following an infection, her husband wrote Friday on Evans’ blog.
Evans, 37, is the bestselling author of "A Year of Biblical Womanhood,” which she wrote after spending a year attempting to follow the Bible’s instructions for women as literally as possible.
Evans’ husband, Dan Evans, said he would be updating his wife’s condition on her blog.
“During treatment for an infection, Rachel began exhibiting unexpected symptoms. Doctors found that her brain was experiencing constant seizures. She is currently in the ICU. She is in a medically induced coma while the doctors work to determine the cause and solution,” he wrote Friday.
Evans was born and raised in Birmingham before moving to Dayton, Tennessee, with her family as a teenager. She still lives in Dayton with her husband.
In a 2014 profile in AL.com, Evans recalled her childhood in the Magic City, where she recalled life on Ruffner Mountain and exploring Christianity.
“I have good, fond memories of Birmingham,” Evans said. “I’m mostly grateful for it. I grew up learning a lot about the Bible. Even though I’ve changed a lot theologically and politically, I’m grateful for my upbringing and the church friends I had. Just because you leave conservative evangelical Christianity, doesn’t mean you leave the church.”
