An apartment complex in the Lakeview area of Birmingham is asking residents to vacate by June 24 because of extensive repairs resulting from a fire last year that destroyed a separate part of the complex that was still under construction.

The Metropolitan complex notified residents in a letter dated June 14 that the complex will need to do extensive work in all occupied apartments and the parking garage because of the September 2018 fire. The notice says some of the repairs will result in airborne contamination.

Residents will be given a moving allowance check and a refund for one-half of June’s rental payments, the notice says.

Residents’ belongings can remain in the apartments until July 8, when they will be donated, the notice says. The repairs are expected to take about six months, the notice says.

Efforts to reach Maxus Properties, which owns the complex, were unsuccessful on Sunday.

The fire destroyed phase two of the Metropolitan development, which was about 80 percent complete, and spread to a nearby law office. More than 40 firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze throughout the night.
