The risk of severe weather will continue in Alabama through this evening. The areas in yellow have the best chance of seeing strong to severe storms.

Thunderstorms continued to move across south Alabama on Thursday afternoon following a stormy night.

A severe thunderstorm watch continues for parts of southeast Alabama. It will be in effect until 9 p.m. CDT but has been trimmed back considerably from earlier this afternoon:

Severe t-storm watch update 530 pm

A severe thunderstorm watch will be in effect for a few south Alabama counties until 9 p.m.

The Alabama counties remaining in the watch are: Barbour, Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike.

The Storm Prediction Center said scattered damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph will be possible in the watch area, as well as isolated large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

The storms are concentrated over south Alabama as of Thursday afternoon. North and much of north-central Alabama have remained storm-free.

The weather service in Birmingham has shifted its marginal risk area to the south:

Forecasters at the NWS in Mobile and Tallahassee, Fla., were also monitoring storms to the north of the coast that were tracking eastward.

Parts of Alabama are still cleaning up after another batch of severe storms during the overnight hours.

One injury was reported in DeKalb County in northeast Alabama after a car ran into a downed tree at the intersection of Highways 68 and 168, according to the weather service.

The weather service offices in both Huntsville and Birmingham have gotten multiple reports of fallen trees and power lines across north and central Alabama.

The city of Gadsden was one of the areas suffering damage. A report to the weather service said there were multiple trees and power lines down in the downtown area.

Thousands lost power overnight:

And now the potential for more storms could stretch into Friday.

The Storm Prediction Center has put a large part of the state under a risk for more storms in Friday’s severe weather outlook, updated earlier this afternoon:

Friday June 21 severe weather outlook

The Storm Prediction Center has added a risk of more storms for Alabama on Friday.

Northwest Alabama will have a slight risk, which means scattered severe storms will be possible. Much of the rest of north, central and east Alabama will have a marginal risk, which means isolated severe storms will be possible.

Forecasters will be watching to see if another storm cluster, or MCS, develops and tracks southeast toward Alabama on Friday. The SPC noted that how far southeast the storms make it is still very uncertain. However there still will be a chance for separate, isolated severe storms to develop in the area on Friday afternoon.

The primary threats once again will be damaging wind gusts. But hail, heavy rain and lightning will also be concerns, according to forecasters.
