Express Rx has bought 10 Fred’s pharmacy locations, including two in Alabama.

A release from the company said it has acquired the Fred’s in Fayette and Hamilton, Alabama, as well as three locations in Louisiana, three in Mississippi, and one in both Tennessee and Kentucky.

“This is an exciting milestone in our company’s proud history,” said Galen Perkins, Express Rx’s Chief Executive Officer. “We welcome the opportunity to provide high-quality healthcare to Fred’s customers and their communities.”

In September, Fred’s announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closing all its stores. The discount retailer and pharmacy chain once operated more than 550 locations in the southeast U.S., though recent closures had brought the number down to less than 80.

The acquisition means the Fred’s locations will continue to operate but will undergo a name change to Express Rx. The change is expected to take place in early November.
