Multiple people are dead and eight missing after a dock fire broke out at a marina in Scottsboro, Alabama.

The fire at Jackson County Park broke out about 12:40 a.m. Monday. At least 35 boats were destroyed in the blaze. Seven people have been transported to local hospitals while the search for eight unaccounted for people continues.

Scottsboro Fire Chief Gene Necklaus would only confirm “multiple” fatalities. Emergency rescue operations on both land and in the water are continuing.

The incident took place in Scottsboro, located in Jackson County, Alabama. With a population of around 52,000, Jackson County is the northeasternmost county in Alabama. Jackson County shares a border with Tennessee to the north and Georgia to the east.

The county seat of Jackson County is Scottsboro, population 15,000. Scottsboro is located in the south central portion of Jackson County. Nationally, the city is most well known for its ties to the Scottsboro Boys, a case involving nine black youths that led to major civil rights and justice reforms after their cases were appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
