80-year-old man attacked with machete and then shot; his tenant jailed

Jeffery DeShawn Blount

A 58-year-old Moundville man faces multiple charges after authorities say he attacked his elderly landlord with a machete and then shot him.

Jeffery Deshawn Blount, a convicted sex offender, is charged with attempted murder and menacing, said District Attorney Michael Jackson. The warrants were issued against Blount on Thursday, and his 80-year-old victim - Roy Tooson - is recovering.

Jackson said Blount - angry because he was being evicted - "tried to cut Roy Tooson's head off" and then shot him in the face and shoulder. The attack happened right outside of Moundville near Tooson's home. Tooson is in stable condition.

The district attorney said the victim's 8-year-old son witnessed the attack.

Blount was convicted in 1995 of second-degree rape. His victim was a 15-year-old girl.

He is now being held in the Hale County Jail. "This defendant has been watching too many movies,'' Jackson said.
