3 wounded during afternoon shootout in Birmingham

Gunfire erupted outside a Birmingham neighborhood store Wednesday, leaving three people wounded.

The shooting happened about 3 p.m. in the 4500 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North. The scene was at 10th Avenue Deli, also known as Sweet Daddy’s.

One person was shot while sitting in a silver Lexus outside the store and rushed by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center. A second victim showed up at the hospital in a dark SUV. The third victim also showed up by private vehicle. One of the victims was shot in the neck. Another was shot in the abdomen.

Birmingham police Sgt. Johnny Williams said one victim has life-threatening injuries. The conditions of the other two did not initially appear quite as serious.

Police have roped off the parking lot outside the store and marked multiple shell casings in the parking lot. Williams said they had not yet identified a motive or a suspect.
