Authorities are trying to locate family members of two people who died in Jefferson County in recent weeks.

Foul play is not suspected in either death, but their bodies are ready to be released for burial and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has not been able to find their relatives.

Cynthia Venita Phillips, also known as Cynthia Cox and Cynthia Suits, was found dead Nov. 30 at the Anchor Motel on Birmingham’s First Avenue North. She had previous addresses in Adger, Dora and Pleasant Grove.

Phillips, 44, was positively identified through fingerprints, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. She was last seen alive the night before she was discovered dead about 5:10 a.m. that Friday. The cause of death has not yet been finalized.

Yates said a family friend believes both her parents are dead. They have been unable to find any other family members.

William Randall Deweese, 50, was found dead in his bed on Dec. 4 in the 3000 block of Avenue J in Ensley. Yates said Deweese was discovered about 6 a.m. that Tuesday and pronounced dead at 6:13 a.m. He had serious medical issues.

Authorities believe Deweese has a mother, and possibly a brother, in Nashville but efforts to reach them have been unsuccessful. Deweese previously lived in the 1300 block of Seventh Avenue North in Bessemer.

Family members or anyone with information on family members is asked to call the coroner’s office at 205-930-3603.
