A 2-year-old boy is being treated for a graze wound after a shooting Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. The shooting happened while the boy was in a vehicle with his parents.

An investigation is underway after a shooting on Birmingham’s Arkadelphia Road left a 2-year-old boy injured.

The shooting happened just before noon on Monday.Initial information at the scene is that boy and his parents were traveling southbound on Arkadelphia in their SUV when someone in another vehicle fired on them.

The 2-year-old boy was grazed in the cheek and is expected to be OK. He was treated on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. It’s not yet clear whether he was taken to Children’s of Alabama.

Police initially said a bullet grazed the boy in his cheek. They later said his injury was from the car seat in which he was sitting.

Officers said the boy’s father returned fire. It wasn’t immediately clear if he struck anyone.

No suspect is in custody, but police believe they know the identity of the shooter. This story will be updated if more information is released.
