One man is dead and another is sought after a broad-daylight shooting in a Birmingham public housing community.
The gunfire erupted about 10:30 a.m. Friday on 29th Avenue North in Collegeville.
North Precinct officers responded to the location and found the victim unresponsive in the passenger’s seat of an SUV. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.
Sgt. Johnny Williams said it appears there was a dispute between the victim and the suspect. "We don’t think this was random,'' he said.
Authorities Friday afternoon identified the victim as 35-year-old Isaiah Mathew Wiggins of Muncie, Indiana.
The suspect, Williams said, fled on foot. He is a black male wearing dark clothing.
The shooting happened just yards away from Collegeville’s community center. Neighbors said they believed the children who go to the center were on a field trip when the shooting happened, but parents expressed concern about the number of children who routinely play outside.
"Anytime something like this occurs, it’s troubling especially when there are kids around,'' Williams said. “We want to get him (the shooter) off the streets.”
