Gunfire in Birmingham’s Southtown public housing community leaves Mulga man dead

A man was shot to death during an altercation on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, in Birmingham's Southtown public housing community.

A 44-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday night in Birmingham’s Southtown public housing community.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Johnny Wayne Mann. He lived in Mulga.

The gunfire erupted about 9:30 p.m. in the 900 block of 24th Street South. Man was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service at 9:45 p.m.

South Precinct commander Capt. Raymond Cochran said the deadly shooting happened in the courtyard of two apartment buildings. He said there was an altercation moments before the shots were fired.

Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams confirmed the victim was shot in the head.

Mann’s death was the second deadly shooting in the city in just over 24 hours. On Monday night, 18-year-old Calvin Vance was fatally shot in a street near his Wylam home.

Mann is Birmingham’s 74th homicide this year. Of those, at least nine have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal. One died in 2019 after being shot in 2018. Police departments only have to submit criminal homicides to the FBI for their year-end tally. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 108 homicides this year, including those in Birmingham.
