44-year-old man killed after altercation at west Birmingham restaurant

West side homicide

Birmingham police investigate a fatal shooting behind Rickwood Field on the city's west side Monday night.

Authorities have released the name of a man who is believed to have been shot to death Monday night in west Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Charles L. Brown. He was 44 and lived in Birmingham.

Authorities say that Brown was at the Burger King on Third Avenue West and Princeton Parkway when there was some type of altercation between Brown and some others at the restaurant. He attempted to get away from the altercation and drove on inside his van.

It’s unclear what happened next, but Birmingham’s West Precinct officers were called to the 200 block of 12th Street West around 8:45 p.m. on a call of an accident. When they arrived, they found Brown inside the wrecked van unresponsive with a gunshot wound, according to Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead on the scene at 8:56 p.m. The van struck a curb there was no damage to the vehicle or property in the area.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy will be done today. No arrests have been made.

Brown is Birmingham’s 84th homicide of 2019. Of those, 10 have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not considered criminal homicides by Birmingham police. Police departments only have to submit criminal homicides to the FBI for year-analysis of numbers.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 127 homicides including the 84 in Birmingham. Anyone with information on Brown’s slaying is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Tipsters to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.
