Man found slain on east Birmingham roadway; homicide investigation underway

An investigation is underway after a man’s body was found in east Birmingham Thursday afternoon.

The discovery was made about 2:30 p.m. at 93rd Street North and Seventh Court North in Zion City. A passerby found the man lying in the roadway unresponsive, said Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities have not said how the man died, but said they are investigating his death as a homicide.

The slaying is Birmingham’s 85th homicide of 2019. Of those, 10 have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not considered criminal homicides by Birmingham police. Police departments only have to submit criminal homicides to the FBI for year-analysis of numbers.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 128 homicides including the 85 in Birmingham. Anyone with information on the slaying is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Tipsters to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.
