Human remains were found Thursday, May 28, 2020, at the City of Birmingham Public Works Department Eastern Area Landfill.

Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin said a human skull and other bones were found while workers were clearing an area for expansion of the landfill. Detectives and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The coroner’s office said the remains are of one person, but as of Friday they do not yet know the gender, race or sex of that person.

It’s too soon to tell whether foul play was involved, or how long the remains have been there.
