George Floyd mural in downtown Birmingham defaced; repairs underway

George Floyd Mural Defaced

A mural of George Floyd painted outside a downtown Birmingham salon was defaced early Thursday, but the creators had already made repairs by midday.

The mural artist Shane B. was painted outside Wheelhouse Salon Tuesday in memory of Floyd, an unarmed, handcuffed black man who died at the hands of Minneapolis police after an officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

In Thursday’s predawn hours, someone in van went to the Third Avenue North location and painted a large X over Floyd’s image. That vandalism is now in the process of being repaired.

“We would love the opportunity to talk with the person who did it and understand where they’re coming from and give them a platform for their voice to be heard,’’ said Andrew Tynes who works with Shane B.

“What happened to George Floyd is awful and unforgiveable,’’ Tynes said. “Everybody has a lot to say about it and I think dialogue is good.”
