A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor.

Sheriff’s officials identified the deputy as Jacob W. Tillman. He is 28 and lives in Gardendale.

Investigators received information Tuesday that Tillman was having inappropriate sexual relations with a juvenile. No additional information about the victim has been released.

Sgt. Joni Money said the victim told investigators the sexual relations had been occurring for an extended period of time.

Court records show Tillman is a husband, as well as a father, however his wife filed for divorce this week.

He is charged with first-degree sexual abuse. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Friday at 4:52 p.m. and released at 5:23 p.m. after posting $20,000 bond.

He resigned from the sheriff’s office. Money said additional charges are possible.
