Man shot to death in the middle of Birmingham street

A man was shot to death in the middle of an east Birmingham street Thursday afternoon.

East Precinct officers were dispatched at noon the East Lake neighborhood in the 8200 block of Fourth Ave. North. The location is just steps away from Birmingham’s East Lake Park.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the male victim unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Police Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the preliminary investigation shows the victim, identified as 49-year-old Tommy Brown. was involved in a physical altercation with another person when the shooting happened. The suspect is not in custody.

Authorities said Brown had relatives that live in the area. “We’re out trying to find evidence and locate witnesses now'' Mauldin said.

The homicide is the 63rd in Birmingham so far in 2020. Of those eight have been ruled justifiable and one accidental and therefore are not deemed criminal. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 92 homicides, including the 63 in Birmingham.
