A Birmingham teen has died following a weekend double shooting in the city’s Smithfield community.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Tyler Artez Lee. He was 18.
The city’s North Precinct officers were notified about 2:54 p.m. Saturday through multiple channels of shooting in the 200 block of Ninth Avenue North in the Smithfield public housing community. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the city’s gunfire detection system – ShotSpotter – indicated at least 15 rounds were fired. Multiple residents also called 911.
Once on the scene, police found two males suffering from gunshots wounds. They were rushed to the hospital. Lee was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. Sunday. The condition of the second victim has not been released.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in the killing. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the shooting appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the victim and the unknown shooter.
Lee is Birmingham’s 65th homicide in 2020. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and one accidental and therefore are not deemed criminal. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 94 slayings, including the 65 in Birmingham.
