17-year-old ID’d as teen killed in southwest Birmingham shootout

Authorities have released the name of a teen killed in a shootout in southwest Birmingham earlier this week.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the victim as Cyrus Montez Abrams Jr. He was 17.

Midfield High posted this about the teen on Facebook: “It is with deepest sympathy that we bring this message. We lost of one of our beloved students, Cyrus Abrams. We are hurting as a Patriot family. Please pray for his family and friends.”

The shooting happened late Tuesday in the 1000 block of 15th Way S.W., Tuesday, said Sgt. Rod Mauldin. The 911 center was notified by Shot Spotter, Birmingham’s gunfire detection system, that 20 rounds had been fired in that area.

When police arrived, they found two people wounded by gunfire. Abrams was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:29 p.m.

The second victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police learned that two other people suffering from gunshot wounds had shown up at area hospitals. Mauldin said their injuries are not life-threatening.

The preliminary investigation indicates that gunfire was exchanged between those who were wounded. No suspects are in custody.
