A would-be robber fired a shot inside a Birmingham KFC on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020.

A shot was fired inside an east Birmingham fast-food restaurant during a robbery Monday afternoon.

Police say the gunman entered KFC on Crestwood Boulevard, brandished a gun and announced it was a holdup. The female clerk began to run, and the suspect fired one shot inside the business.

There were customers inside at the time of the robbery and gunfire. No one was injured.

The suspect fled on foot eastbound on Crestwood Boulevard. Initial reports were that he was wearing a mask, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether that was intended to be a disguise or protection from COVID-19.

 Police have detained several people for questioning at the nearby USA Economy Lodge. Authorities said they are trying to determine whether the suspect is among those detained.
