Teens shoot their driver when they can't find anyone to rob, police say

A teen boy shot in south Birmingham Sunday was with a group of friends planning to rob people when his friends ended trying to rob him, police said.

The shooting happened at 7:48 p.m. at 29 Fifth Avenue South, police said. The 16-year-old male victim was taken to Children's of Alabama where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. He is recovering.

Birmingham police Sgt. Johnny Williams said the investigation so far has shown that the teen boy picked up five friends and went to the Loveman Village area in search of robbery victims. Once they arrived, they were unable to locate anyone to rob.

That's when, Williams said, the five friends decided to rob the 16-year-old driver who had picked them up. They shot him in the leg when he refused to give up his car keys.

Police said the 16-year-old victim is not cooperating with detectives.
