A former city official in Hale County has been indicted following accusations that she stole more than $100,000 from the municipal court system.

The grand jury on Wednesday issued the two felony indictments against 37-year-old Rhonda Jean Wilson. She is the former municipal court clerk in Moundville.

Hale County District Attorney Michael Jackson said Wilson was indicted on charges of first-degree theft of property and using an official position for personal gain. She was initially arrested on the same charges March 12.

According to court records, Moundville Police Chief Toby Banks on March 5 requested an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation into the circumstances surround the theft of municipal court money. The missing money was discovered during a partial audit of the city.

That investigation deemed that $135,449 had been taken between Feb. 14, 2012 through Feb. 14, 2018.

Jackson said Wilson will be arraigned in Hale County Circuit Court on the upcoming months.
