Fargo Men Charged with Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder

Two Fargo men were in court Monday to face charges of Class AA murder and conspiracy to commit murder, following an early Friday morning murder in Fargo.

According to court documents, Fargo Police were called to gunshots in the area of 300 6th Avenue North early Friday morning. When on scene, officers located Jason Halverson, who appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Halvorson was transported to Sanford by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers responding observed a vehicle leaving the area of the shooting with multiple occupants. Officers also observed a male matching the suspect description in the vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted, and the two men, Kareem Byrd, Jr., and Charles Harris III, were identified as suspects.

The incident report states that two firearms were recovered, a nine millimeter semiautomatic handgun and a .22 caliber revolver. The autopsy later confirmed that the victim suffered gunshot wounds which appeared to be from those two type of guns.

Both suspects were interviewed at the Fargo Police Department, and Byrd, Jr., told investigators that he and Harris III were involved in a verbal confrontation with Halverson, and that they retrieved firearms from a nearby location and confronted Halverson.

Byrd, Jr., also stated that both he and Harris III fired multiple rounds at the victim.

Harris III told investigators he was not directly involved.

Both Harris III and Byrd, Jr., are being held on $2 million cash bail. They will return for a preliminary hearing on July 17.
