Toms River fire: Mom, kids, pets rescued from burning home

TOMS RIVER — Firefighters rescued a mother and two children from a burning Brookside Drive home early Friday morning.

Firefighters from Toms River Fire companies 1 and 2 and the East Dover Fire Co. went to 646 Brookside Drive at about 1:47 a.m., according to a news release from fire officials.

"Units from these three stations along with members of the Silverton Fire Company, Pleasant Plains Fire Company and Island Heights Fire Company had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes," according to the release. "A mother and two children were rescued from the home. Fire officials say working smoke alarms in the home allowed the family to evacuate safely."

Firefighter Lt. Robert Krohn and firefighter Nick Cirz from Toms River Fire Company 2 also rescued a cat and a dog from the home, according to the announcement.

Township police and fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
