This 8,000-square-feet bungalow in Chandigarh, belonging to a three-generational family, goes all out when it comes to expressing art through modern maximalism. When the clients approached Badrinath Kaleru and Prerna Kaleru of Studio Ardete, the brief was very simple—they wanted their home to be like a modern-day art gallery.

Chandigarh Bungalow: A Glittering Haven

‘Opulence Mansion' as titled by the architects, is drenched in art and luxury. The rich colours and decadent materials lend a luxurious feel to spaces; the artistic sculptures and installations add to the grandeur. The home glimmers with contemporary charm and lavishness and incorporates carefully sourced furniture and custom pieces from Formus, New Delhi.

Chandigarh Bungalow: An Artistic Interior

To adhere to the theme of chic and vibrant, the home explores new objects and materials to create a sense of timeless sophistication. The spaces are designed such that they merge modern art with contemporary interiors.

Each room is personalised according to the desires of its users. A dramatic blend of textures and colours paired with extravagant chandeliers and art pieces give every room a unique personality. In the son's room, the bed is designed such that it gives the illusion that it's floating. The wall behind the bed shows the names of his favourite celebrities and sportsmen engraved on it. The daughter's room gives new meaning to a modern fairytale theme. The most eye-catching feature of the room is the rope art installation used as a sheer curtain.

Chandigarh Bungalow: A Charismatic Interior

Art takes centre stage as soon as you knock on the entrance door—a sculptural wooden door manufactured by Knock On Wood, New Delhi.

The dining room has a metal installation by product designer and artist Mukul Goyal. A 16 feet long chandelier in hues of blue, green and yellow, made with hand-blown Murano glass adorns the staircase.

Next to it, on the lobby wall sits a kinetic installation in metal by Mukul Goyal. As we head downstairs, an enthralling lighting installation can be seen next to the jacuzzi. “Made by art & glass, the installation gives an optical illusion of infinity within the lights,” says Badrinath. The sculptural wall behind the swimming pool is custom built by Reef & Stream and is inspired by the Grand Canyon.

Chandigarh Bungalow: A Collective Vision

The design of this mansion showcases a variety of different materials and installations. The vision of the architect and the client was in harmony as they shared a common aspiration of creating a space that reflected art. “We approach all our projects by looking at space as more than just four walls. In this particular house, each space was well thought out and designed in accordance with the client's needs and vision,” concludes Badrinath.
