Hèrmosa Design Studio reimagines Rajasthani design motifs with Swedish sensibilities

Jaipur’s Hèrmosa Design Studio presents a modern and contemporary take on Jaipur and its crafts
Hèrmosa Design Studio gives Jaipur a contemporary home decor store

Among the home decor store openings we get invites to every week, Jaipur's Hèrmosa Design Studio came across as a breath of freshly crafted air. The three-storeyed modular furniture and home concept showroom located in Hathroi — known for its namesake palace and fort — is challenging the dominant tropes of what an interior decor space can encompass, not just in the Pink City, but across the state. "Modern Rajasthan is undergoing urbanisation at an accelerated pace. People here like experimenting with new things, which is what makes it the perfect place to tap into the tier-two crowd," says Pranjal Agrawal, CEO, Hèrmosa Design Studio on why they chose to open their flagship in Jaipur.

Hèrmosa Design Studio: Contemporary Crafts

The entire store presents a contemporary take on Jaipur and its crafts: all the ethnic and cultural aspects of Jaipur, from the arches and jhalis, to the intricate patterns and colours, have been presented in a modern and chic format. Channeling the Pink city vibe, the thematic colour of the store — millennial pink. "[Our brand] targets the contemporary millennial who is well-travelled and is looking to keep up with the times. At Hèrmosa Design Studio, we give our customers an avenue to incorporate the trends they see globally in their homes via a local store," says Mugdha Bhagchandka, the creative lead at Hèrmosa Design Studio.

“During the design journey, our research and development team located in Sweden came back to us with outstanding inspirations,” Mugdha enthuses. The dualistic approach has resulted in a creative contrast—Jaipur's centuries-old handicrafts reinterpreted as forward-looking and futuristic, with clean cuts and the minimal aesthetics as opposed to Rajasthan's regalia and opulence.

Hèrmosa Design Studio: Elaborate Interior Styling

The pan-India home décor and furnishing flagship is spread across 10,000 square feet. Following the popular design layout of replicating the store as an actual home, this one is divided into areas which are elaborate in detailing like in the form of a den, a living room, a dining area, a master bedroom, a toddler's nursery, and a teenager's bedroom. The store takes the design scheme to the next level, with the basement area, which offers a one-stop showcase for commercial interiors, including hostel and hotel rooms, along with office spaces. The store also houses a roster of exclusive brands, including Nikhil Thampi Label, Kira The Label, Bistro Quaint and Masilo Organic Baby.

Hèrmosa Design Studio: Bold New Landscape

Hèrmosa scores brownie points again for its furniture range: state-of-the-art and modular furniture that are easy to maintain as compared to the antiquated pieces of Rajasthan. With sofa sets, side tables, beds, entertainment units, cupboards, dressing tables, coffee tables, computer tables, chairs, storage cabinets and more, you'll need a few hours at hand to peruse.

Mugdha admits that the downside of catering to the millennial frame of mind is that technology can make anything obsolete in no time. "Technology changes rapidly; the challenge is to adapt to it, master it, excel at it and be open to new influences in a short time. It is tough in an ever-evolving commercial and social landscape, to remain true to the core conceptual ideas while keeping up with tech upgrades and customer engagement," opines Mugdha. On the flip side, this very technology can be leveraged to present a traditional store concept in a unique format. "We are looking to explore augmented reality for better understanding of the designs, especially when it comes to themed furniture," concludes Pranjal.
