A Sioux Falls man was arrested Thursday after police say he threatened a paramedic with a razor blade while being taken to the hospital.

Arnold Ray Spotted Elk, 35, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance, police spokesman Sam Clemens said.

Police say Spotted Elk was fighting with his girlfriend in the 1700 block of West 12th Street on Thursday when he injured his thumb severely enough to warrant medical attention. While he was being taken to the hospital by ambulance, he allegedly pulled out a razor blade and threatened one of the paramedics on board.

The ambulance pulled over near 18th Street and Seventh Avenue and police were summoned, Clemens said. After Spotted Elk was treated for his injuries, he was arrested and taken to jail.

Spotted Elk also faces a controlled substance charge after a syringe of meth was allegedly found on him.
