Police: Person who jumped into spillway at Big Sioux River died

A person who jumped into the Big Sioux River at the spillway in Sioux Falls has died, police say. 

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a water rescue report at about 11:46 p.m. along the 1600 block of N. Riverside Ave., after receiving reports of a person jumping into the river at the pedestrian bridge over the spillway, according to a press release from the city. 

Crews searched the water from the shore and by boat for almost two hours before finding the person at about 1:20 a.m. almost 1.25 miles downstream from where the person went in, the release states. 

The person was removed from the water by boat and taken to an ambulance for medical treatment, where they were pronounced dead.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens said authorities believe the death was a suicide.
