Coronavirus cases increase by 48 in South Dakota, no new deaths reported

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in South Dakota increased by 48 on Tuesday and no new deaths were reported.

South Dakota has a total of 7,572 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, according to the state health department. That doesn't include people who show symptoms or are asymptomatic but are not tested. A total of 786 test results were reported on Tuesday and the positive rate for coronavirus tests on Tuesday was 6.1%.

The state has 864 active COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. Recoveries statewide increased to 6,599. The state health department says 744 total people have been hospitalized during the pandemic, and 62 are currently hospitalized.

Coronavirus patients are occupying 3% of staffed hospital beds in the state while 53% of hospital beds are available, according to the state health department. Coronavirus patients are occupying 4% of intensive care unit beds, and 36% of ICU beds are available. Six percent of ventilators are being used by coronavirus patients while 78% of the state's ventilator capacity is available.

Cases in Minnehaha County increased by 18 to a total of 3,778, and Lincoln County's cases increased by three to a total of 400 cases, according to the state health department. Of the cases, 3,490 have recovered in Minnehaha County and 354 cases have recovered in Lincoln County.

Lake County had two more cases on Tuesday, bringing the number of new cases since July 6 to 15. The county has a total of 37 cases as of Tuesday. Madison High School athletics and activities have been suspended after a participant tested positive for the coronavirus last week and four more tested positive by Monday. The source of the cases is unclear, but some of the participants who have tested positive were together over the July 4 weekend.

Pennington County has a total of 649 cases after an increase of eight on Tuesday.  Yankton County had an increase of three cases to a total of 88 cases on Tuesday. Union County saw an increase of five cases, for a total of 156 cases on Tuesday, according to the health department.

Brown and Hughes counties each had two new cases, for a total of 361 cases in Brown County and 72 cases in Hughes County, according to the health department.
