Two more die of the coronavirus in South Dakota, cases increase by 80

Two more people have died of the coronavirus in South Dakota, and the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state increased by 80 on Wednesday.

South Dakota has a total of 111 COVID-19 deaths, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. 

The two people who died were men in their 70s. One was a Butte County resident and one was a Pennington County resident, according to the health department.

South Dakota had 80 new cases on Wednesday. The state has a total of 7,652 COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday, according to the state health department. That doesn't include people who show symptoms or are asymptomatic but are not tested. A total of 1,379 test results were reported on Wednesday and the positive rate for coronavirus tests on Wednesday was 5.8%.

The state has 878 active COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. Recoveries statewide increased to 6,663. The state health department says 752 total people have been hospitalized during the pandemic, and 59 are currently hospitalized.

Coronavirus patients are occupying 2% of staffed hospital beds in the state while 54% of hospital beds are available, according to the state health department. Coronavirus patients are occupying 4% of intensive care unit beds, and 31% of ICU beds are available. Five percent of ventilators are being used by coronavirus patients while 80% of the state's ventilator capacity is available.

Cases in Minnehaha County increased by 18 to a total of 3,796, and Lincoln County's cases increased by four to a total of 404 cases, according to the state health department. Of the cases, 3,505 have recovered in Minnehaha County and 360 cases have recovered in Lincoln County.

Pennington County had the largest increase on Wednesday. Cases there increased by 25 to 674 total cases, according to the health department.

Oglala Lakota County's cases increased by seven to 118 total cases, according to the health department.

Beadle and Lake counties had an increase of four cases each to 557 total cases in Beadle and 41 total cases in Lake County Codington County now has 96 total cases after an increase of three on Wednesday, according to the health department.
