The inability of the American medical system to perform timely, accurate testing for the presence of COVID-19 has hampered efforts to understand and respond to the pandemic.

South Dakota reported no new coronavirus deaths on Saturday, while active cases decreased by 10 as there were 73 new cases and 83 recoveries, according to the state department of health.

There have now been 7,862 total positive cases in the state, with 6,891 recoveries and 116 deaths. There are currently 70 people in hospital for COVID-19, while 771 have been hospitalized total.

The state has conducted a total of 89,385 tests, with 92 percent of those tests coming back negative.

Most cases continue to reside in Minnehaha County (3,846), with Pennington (713), Beadle (566), Lincoln (411) and Brown (366) rounding out the top five counties for confirmed cases.
