Scandinavian Designs opens in Sioux Falls' old Toys R Us location
A new furniture store in Sioux Falls specializes in the pared-down Scandinavian style increasingly popular in home décor.
Scandinavian Designs opened last week in the old Toys R Us location behind the Empire Mall. After months of revamping the store both inside and out, Sioux Falls’ newest furniture retailer brings new styles and brands to the local market.
The store offers a wide selection of customizable designs in the mid-century modern, rustic Scandinavian and contemporary modern styles.
"It allows the customers to get a unique piece," said Dan Ward, store manager for the Sioux Falls location. "Furniture is part of your house, but it's the backdrop of your life."

Scandinavian Designs is based in Petaluma, California, and is in the process of growing its footprint in the Midwest and elsewhere after buying up some of the old property holdings shed by Toys R Us last year during the retail giant’s bankruptcy proceedings.
Sioux Falls marks Scandinavian Designs’ newest location in the region, with another store opening eventually in Fargo, North Dakota.
After a soft-opening last week, company leaders hope to have a grand opening sometime this spring.
Matching the style of much of its furniture, Scandinavian Designs' Sioux Falls store feels simple, bright and open, with natural light pouring in from the bank of windows near the main entrance. The store’s 30,000-square-foot showroom is divided into sections, each focusing on a different style.
Shoppers will find the warmth of natural woods in the rustic Scandinavian section, clean lines and low-profile looks in the mid-century modern section and some of the trendier styles in store’s the contemporary modern section.
In addition to furniture for the living room and bedroom, Scandinavian Designs also sells dining sets and mattresses.
"One of the tenets of Scandinavian design is form follows function," said Bob Schneider, regional general manager for the retailer.
