A local brew pub is stepping up its game in a big way.

Remedy Brewing Co. is planning a "major expansion," adding a production and canning facility to increase its capacity and sell its beer more places, said co-owner Matt Hastad.

"We've been running out of beer both in our taproom and in the little bit of distribution we're doing right now with Dakota Beverage," he said. "Demand in our taproom keeps raising, and we're out of capacity for our brewing."

Remedy's production facility will be located at 611 N. West Ave., south of the Denny Sanford Premier Center. The brewery opened at the 8th & Railroad building on East 8th Street downtown in 2017.

The new facility will be used to brew beer and can five of the brewery's mainstays: Nonsense IPA, Queen Bee cream ale, Espina Mexican lager, Split-shift Dakota Common lager, and Hefe Metal, its Bavarian-style hefeweizen. The production capacity means Remedy can also try the occasional "fun, unique and funky" brews, Hastad said.

"Some will be year-round, and some will rotate," he said. "Then we’re going to try a couple of seasonals and one-offs, as well, and those we haven’t set down yet to see what the market is looking for."

And stay tuned for future plans for the production facility. More news will be on the way, maybe in about a year.

"We’ve got some plans," Hastad said. "To start with, our main focus is to get the production facility up and running, but we have big plans South Dakota hasn’t seen yet. But we’re exploring our options to see if it’s feasible before we jump in with both feet.”

Canning beer means Remedy will be able to distribute its brews to liquor stores, gas stations and provide beer for events instead of only being able to provide a keg to tap.

Remedy will be the second local brewer to can its product, following on the footsteps of Fernson Brewing Co., all part of the "collaborative yet competitive beer market" in Sioux Falls, Hastad said.

"Fernson Brewing came before us and really opened up the doors and a lot of avenues we're looking to get into now," he said.

Hastad said the plan is to grow at a sustainable pace but to continue growth. And expanding production and canning is a obviously an important component, entered into with the support of customers, fellow local brewers and its distributor.

"We’re really excited to partner with Dakota Beverage," he said. "They’re our distributor currently, and they’ve been nothing but phenomenal at helping us get to this point and helping us to get to realistic numbers."
