Argus Leader
Jason Ball, president of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, listens to a speaker during the Good Morning Sioux Falls Legislative Breakfast hosted by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2017. Legislators and business leaders rubbed shoulders at the event which aimed to let local lawmakers explains their legislative priorities before the 2018 session.

Leaders in the Sioux Falls business community have a wish list for the next head of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.

Former President and CEO Jason Ball left his position Friday, after announcing in July he was moving on to a similar role in the Austin, Texas area.

As part of a national search by the Chamber’s board of directors, the hiring firm Waverly Partners drafted a seven-page job description for interested candidates.

Priorities highlighted in the Waverly document show some of the standard expectations for anyone taking the helm at a regional business advocacy group, including executive leadership experience, experience leading volunteer groups and economic development skills.

Chamber leadership is asking candidates to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and would also like to see candidates with advanced degrees in business, law or public administration.

The candidate should have a “proven track record of success,” according to Waverly, and experience working with boards.

Some other items on the Chamber’s wish list for president candidates:

  • Financial management experience, working with budgets of at least $3 million in revenue;
  • Fundraising experience, included leading capital campaigns, sponsorships, advertising and hosting special events;
  • Inclusive leadership style between diverse groups and diverse programs
  • Media relations skills;
  • Communication skills;
  • Genuine;
  • Decisive;
  • Focused.
